The Cowra region is often referred to as Chardonnay country, due to the production of large volumes of consistently good Chardonnay. Moderately priced red wines are increasingly being made, displaying ripe, soft fruit flavours.
Cowra was first planted with vines in the late 1800s, but it wasn't until the 1970s when there was a general surge in wine investment that vineyards were established and grapes produced in commercial quantities. Chardonnay was the variety of choice and it has since remained the main variety grown in the region. However, a diversity of plantings has been introduced which include red varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz and white varieties, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling.
